Perhaps, that is why so many studies have been carried out by doctors to ascertain that biotin has the potential to help your hair grow healthier and stronger.

Biotin supplements are popular and widely consumed. These products are essentially a part of the B complex family. Furthermore, a reasonable amount of Biotin is needed by the body system for the enhancement of metabolism and for the organs to function at their maximum capacity.

Recently, in August 2017, a study got published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health – “A Review of the Use of Biotin for Hair Loss”. The research showed evidence of clinical improvement in the patients’ hair growth after receiving biotin. This is just one study, but, if you start looking into the research studies, which are innumerable, then you would find that almost all the studies have shown that biotin do have a positive effect on your hair growth.

What is biotin?

You might not have noticed any similarity in food products, such as banana, nuts, avocado, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there is one substance which is present in all these things in small amounts and i.e. biotin. Originated from the Greek word “biotos” meaning “sustenance” or “life”, biotin is one of the B complex vitamins which is water soluble and is commonly known as Vitamin H or B-7.

Biotin or Vitamin B-7 has many benefits and is considered quite healthy. It is also recommended by doctors during pregnancy, as it helps in the embryonic growth.

How can Biotin deficiency cause some illnesses and diseases?

Biotin deficiency is a major cause of some sicknesses and diseases. When the body is low on this vitamin, the hair and nails are affected. You begin to lose hair almost immediately and young nails become brittle and less strong. Biotin shortage has also been proven to cause diabetes and high blood pressure. So, it is important that you eat well and eat healthily. Eat a lot of foods rich in vitamins and minerals. This will help ensure that your body does not become low on biotin and other vitamins needed to sustain the body. It will also help in making sure that the body gets all its biotin requirements on a daily basis.

People consume biotin pills for different reasons. Some take it because of their hair and nails, while other people take it to resolve certain dysfunctions of their skin. There is also another group that uses these products to increase the amount of biotin they are able to get from their diet or because a doctor or physician told them to do so.

What are biotin-rich foods?

Vitamin B7 is found in many of the food products that we take regularly in our meals. This is one of the reasons why usually we do not require a supplement of biotins. However, for people facing hair loss, dull skin, hair thinning, it is highly recommended to opt for biotin pills.

The common food products that contain Biotin are:

Vegetables and Fruits: Mushroom, cauliflower, spinach, banana, avocado, sweet potato are some of the food products that are biotin rich. Among the green leafy vegetables, spinach contains the highest biotin level.

Nuts and Legumes: Undoubtedly, nuts and legumes are healthy for your body, but when it comes to biotin, these are one of the best options for you. Walnuts, almonds, pecans, and peanuts are definitely going to boost your biotin level in the body. Soybeans and green beans are also a great source of biotin.

Non-Vegetables: Eggs, kidney, liver are the other food products that are a rich source of biotin. Interestingly, egg yolks are considered to contain one of the highest levels of biotin.

There are many other food products that contain biotin, such as cheese, oatmeal, whole grain bread, salmon, raspberries, carrots, chicken, etc.

If you want to have a biotin rich diet in addition to biotin oral supplements, then you must try spinach, carrots and mushroom salad with some almonds and a hard-boiled egg for your lunch or dinner.  Certainly, it will have a positive effect on your hair.

What is the role of Biotin in your body?

Popular as “beauty vitamin” due to its positive effect on your hair, skin, and nails, biotin helps in producing energy in your body by converting food into glucose and also by producing fatty acids and amino acids. Strikingly, Biotin with Pantothenic acid is also helpful in creating Vitamin D.

As a matter of fact, Biotin is a vitamin that can only be synthesized by beneficial bacteria present in the human digestive tract, molds, yeasts, algae, and other specific plant species. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the dietary intake of biotin (vitamin B7) has many health benefits, out of which the maintenance of normal skin and normal hair shows that you may choose biotin for hair growth.

How can biotin help you in hair growth?

In November 2017, a “Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study” was carried out to evaluate “the Efficacy of an Oral Supplement in Women with Self-perceived Thinning Hair” and its results when got published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, it showed that the daily administration of a biotin nutritional supplement significantly increased the hair growth of the patients after 90 and 180 days. This brings us to the fact that biotin is helpful in improving your hair growth. Now, the question is how this happens and how can you do it?

As already mentioned that biotin produces fatty acids and amino acids. Now, it is important for you to understand that biotin also helps in activating the metabolism of protein or amino acid in your hair roots as well as fingernail cells. This way when you take a biotin supplement, then it has a positive effect on your hair growth in a natural way.

Why choose biotin for hair growth?

The best thing about biotin is that you do not have to apply anything externally to your scalp for hair growth. You just need to take oral biotin supplements with your normal diet that usually contains biotin rich food. This will let you get rid of hair thinning and hair loss problem. Furthermore, this intake of supplements is under your control. Another interesting thing about biotin supplements is that when you feel that you do not need extra biotin in your body, then just avoid using more biotin food products.

Amazingly, these days many famous brands of hair shampoos have introduced keratin smooth products. You will be glad to know that many studies claim that biotin also improves keratin infrastructure. Therefore, when you start taking biotin hair pills or supplements, then you can break the shackles of harsh hair care products, as you will be having both keratin and biotin level improved in your body to take care of your skin, nails, and hair.

How much dose of Biotin must you take?

You must be thinking about the repercussions of taking biotin supplements. There is nothing wrong in having such apprehensions, as these days you cannot try anything just like this. However, when it comes to biotin pills, you do need to worry much about it. Its intake will not have any toxicity in your body in case of high dosage. Despite saying that, it is important to highlight that there are no official guidelines related to the daily intake of Vitamin B7. Nevertheless, if you are planning to take biotin for hair growth, then you must take up to 30 to 100 micrograms Biotin a day. Generally, the biotin pills are available in tablet form for – 10 micrograms (mcg), 50 mcg, and 100 mcg. The best thing is that any extra amount of biotin will get flushed away, as it is water soluble.

The question of how long it will take for you to see noticeable changes or improvement from taking a biotin supplement is relative and depends on your expected outcome. This is because the time it takes for a person using it to resolve skin-related issues will differ from how long it will take another person foreseeing to get longer hair to see any meaningful changes. Therefore, what you expect to get as a result and how soon you expect to see it depends largely on why you are using biotin supplements.

Furthermore, there are so many pharmaceutical companies that produce drugs and supplements. It is only logical to expect that the time it takes to get a result from a biotin supplement produced by manufacturer A will differ from that of manufacturer B.

How long it will take for a biotin supplement to work also depends on the level of biotin that is present in your body before consuming these pills. A person that is very low on biotin will take a longer time to see any meaningful changes compared to someone who is simply supplementing their healthy biotin level.

Physiological factor regarding how long do Biotin supplements take to work

Physiological factors are crucial in determining the amount of time it will take for a biotin supplement to work. While it is easier for some people’s bodies to absorb these pills and make them work quickly, some people’s bodies may not provide a working environment suitable enough for these capsules to thrive, thereby producing a slower outcome.

Lastly, how quickly a biotin supplement will work for you depends largely on how well you use it. You can’t expect that somebody who takes this or any other supplement under the care of a doctor to have the same result as somebody who depends largely on his own knowledge in taking these pills. We have always reiterated that before taking any drug or supplement, it is important that you ask your doctor about it and how to use it.

Research has shown that it takes between 2 weeks and 2 months to see any meaningful change by women who take biotin supplements to grow their hair. The pace of their outcome was proportional to how well they took these capsules and whether they followed their doctor’s instructions.

Conclusion

If you haven’t noticed any improvement since you started using biotin supplements, you are advised to talk to your doctor about it. If you have been using a biotin supplement without a doctor’s input, please discontinue its use.

I started taking biotin supplements two years ago and started seeing an improvement in my hair after about 2 months. I have fine hair which tends to get frizzy and although the texture didn’t change much my hair definitely started growing faster. It looks a lot healthier although I do need to cut it more often. My nails have gotten stronger as well which is another plus. Have you heard of any negative side effects from prolonged use of biotin supplements? I’m a little concerned about that.
